Is Your Curly Hair Dry & Weak?

Posted On Aug 07, 2022,

Curly hair is so attractive because it is spontaneous and unpredictable. Every girl with curly hair has had her fair share of frustrations trying to combat excessive dryness. If you’ve come down with a case of extremely dry and weak curly hair, then you’ve come to the right place.

Curly hair has a natural tendency for dryness, much more so than straight hair. This is because the natural oils your scalp produces can travel down the strand of a straight hair much easier than a curly one. One of the main causes of dry and weak curly hair is lack of moisture. When curly hair lacks moisture it will reach out into the atmosphere to find it instead. Weak hair can be caused by what you do to your hair, but it can also be brought on by what you do to your body. An unhealthy diet, or too-low of a caloric intake (crash diet), can lead to hair falling out. Sometimes curly hair looks limp because the curls weigh down the roots, especially when there is a lot of density. Curly hair is vulnerable. Sadly, the twists and turns in the structure make the cuticle weaker and also increase the amount of tangles, therefore shedding is more common with curly-haired gals because we don’t wash or brush our hair as often as our straight hair counterparts. When we wash our hair, all of the hairs that were caught in our hair from the last time we washed it naturally comes out.

Washing your hair with hot water and drying your strands with a towel can also cause friction on the hair cuticle, leading to dry and weak hair as well. Color lifting agents are harsh, and our strands are delicate. Lightening your hair too much, too quickly can break down the structure of your hair and make it too porous. High porosity hair can easily take on moisture but can lose it just as easily.

Curls generally need a little extra love, and it's important to know how to do right by your hair so it can stay looking amazing.

How to prevent dry brittle hair?

The first step in restoring your hair’s healthy texture and shine is to make healthy changes to your diet. When your diet is poor, it will be reflected in your body and in your hair. A healthy diet for hair includes plenty of lean protein as well as fresh fruits and vegetables to provide antioxidants and hair-supporting nutrients like biotin, vitamin E, vitamin C and iron.

In addition to making healthy changes to your diet, there are certain things you can do to start improving the condition of your dry, brittle hair. Here are some ideas:

  • Use a sulfate free shampoo.
  • Take vitamins.
  • Use a hair mask (or two) weekly.
  • Protect your hair at night.
  • Use heat as infrequently as you can.
  • Get a trim.
  • Don't straighten your hair when wet.
  • Apply a deep conditioner.
  • Coat your strands with hair oil.
  • Shampoo only your scalp.
  • Do not use products with harsh chemicals.
  • If you do use heat, please please use a heat protectant.
  • Use essential oils.
  • Dilute your shampoo with water.
  • Choose the right brush or comb.
  • Add omega-3s and antioxidants to your diet.
  • Avoid washing your hair every day
